Notes about Adriana Sulkers

TRANSLATION

Approximately six months prior to the migration of her entire family to Canada (father, mother and 11 siblings) first born child Adriana was admitted to the psychiatric clinic named 'de Meerenberg' located in Bloemendaal (Nh) on February 28, 1910. Because of her psychological condition she was refused entry into Canada and was left behind in Holland, all by herself.

At some moment in time Adriana was re-located to the clinic named 'Willem Arntsz Hoeve ' located in Den Dolder (Ut), where she died only two days after the liberation of Holland from the occupying German Nazi Army.

Adriana was buried at the 'Municipal Cemetery' located in Zeist (Ut). According to information obtained from the manager of the cemetery (Mr. A.D.E. van der Laan) all deceased persons in that particular timeframe, were buried in carton boxes due to a total lack of timber as a result of WWII. In January 1984 all particular graves (including that of Adriana) were cleared January1984 and the remains re-buried elsewhere on the cemetery. The aforementioned manager himself was involved in the re-burial in 1984.

All of his adult life cousin Hermanus Cornelius (Herm) Sulkers had a hard time accepting the fact that his aunt Adriana, first born of his grandparents, was denied entry into Canada due to her psycological condition and, at age 28, was left behind in Holland all by herself. Herm travelled to Holland various times doing his utmost to find out about Adriana's fate and grave-site.
