Hugo van Bourgondië was een jongere zoon van Willem I van Bourgondië en van Stephania van Longwy-Metz. In 1085 werd hij aartsbisschop van Besançon, terwijl zijn broer Gwijde, de latere paus Callixtus II er administrator werd.
