    Op de website Radio-Holland BV, 100 Jaar Maritieme Radiocommunicatie 2004 haalt Johan de Geus herinneringen op aan Gerrit:
    De Praktijkcursus
    Deze cursus werd gehouden in de Kerkstraat, achter de Keizersgracht.(...). Radio Holland had een telegrafist gevraagd ons wat praktische kennis bij te brengen van de administratie van Radio Holland. Dat werd de heer Gerrit Stumpel. Een meesterlijke vent uit Buitenveldert, die smakelijk kon vertellen uit z'n vaartijd. We genoten hier enorm van. Ook van hem heb ik toen heel veel opgestoken.
    Eén verhaal herinner ik mij nog. Als hij met verlof zomers thuis was vroeg z'n vrouw hem wel eens om samen met het hele gezin een dagje naar het strand te gaan. Maar dan wilde ze wel hebben dat hij z'n uniform aandeed. Nou dat geloof je toch zeker zelf niet, want zijn weerwoord was dan: "Kan men aan het aantal kinderen zien hoe vaak ik met verlof thuis ben geweest, kijk wel uit!"
    Dat heeft hij dan ook nooit gedaan. M'n jongere broer, aangestoken door mijn enthousiasme denk ik, is een jaar of zeven na mij ook als telegrafist gaan varen. Zijn eerste reis als assistent was met Gerrit Stumpel. Hij trof het beter dan ik op m'n eerste reis.
