woonden in de jaren ´30 en ´40 in de Berkelstraat, een zijstraat van de
Vlietlaan, op Kralingen. Mijn opa van moederskant was Gerrit Smits-Schouten en hij woonde in de
Helenastraat, ook een zijstraat van de Vlietlaan.
Zowel Adam als mijn opa lustten een flinke borrel en zij kwamen regelmatig in dezelfde kroegen op de
Vlietlaan en in ´t Jaffa.
Een nooit opgehelderd verschil van mening maakte dat de twee gezworen vijanden van elkaar waren,
hetgeen voor iedereen in Kralingen duidelijk zichtbaar werd wanneer de alcohol de overhand kreeg.
Als kleine jongen weet ik nog heel goed, dat mijn opa Gerrit een fotoalbum had, waarop hij op de
voorkant een foto van een oerlelijke chimpansee geplakt had, waaronder met sierlijke letters "Adam van
Kesteren" geschreven stond. Tegen mij
zei hij dan altijd: "Kijk jongen, een zoon van deze aap is met jouw
tante Sien getrouwd´.
