Notes about Berend (Ben) Melles Mulder

Berend Mulder , affectionately called 'Pa' had a milk delivery business in the Netherlands. As a part time job, he worked at a greenhouse in Middlestum. For the duration of WWII the family was never forced out of their home.
He has a leading citizen of the town and became the victim of a ploy by the Burgermiester (mayor) who sought re-election and thought that it would help his cause to set up a scenario where he could play an important role in freeing several of the towns good citizens from the Germans.
During the night, with the house surrounded by armed Germans, Berend was led off in their company. The rest of the family knew not the reason nor what would happen to their father. It was a scary time for everyone. After several days, Ben was released back to his home. The ploy was to make it appear that the Burgermeister had plead for their release . He would look good, and hopefully be reappointed.

The family immigrated to the United States on March 26th of 1949 aboard the SS Veendam. The port of
arrival was Hoboken where they boarded a train for Kalamazoo, Michigan.
A home on North Westnedge had been purchsed by a relative and the family. This was the family home until both Berend and Trijntje deceased.

'Pa' Mulder worked for Kalamazoo Vegetable Parchment (KVP) at Kendleberger Park in park maintenance for many years. Later he worked in the mill at KVP until his retirement due to poor health(Emphysema).

He enjoyed his children and grand -children until he deceased November 03, 1975
