Dirk was muzikaal leider van de krontjongclub "Momamza". Zij speelden veelal Engelse en Amerikaanse muziekstukken in Indische kledij, ook diverse broers van Dirk speelden daarin mee o.a. met mondharmonica.
Bij een herdenkingsfeest in 1942 in grote zaal van Hotel van de Woude (het latere Roxy-theater), schreef de journalist dat het gezien de omstandigheden in Nederlands Indië, aanbeveling verdiende om eens andere muziek te spelen.

Overleed als gevolg van een verkeersongeluk te Meppel, terwijl hij op weg was naar het 25 huwelijksfeest van zijn broer Martijn en Eltje Tuit.

Door een noodlottig ongeval is op 26 juni van ons heengegaan mijn lieve man, vader en grootvader Dirk Steffens op de leeftijd van 55 jr.
