    Voor verlichting binnenshuis beschikte men destijds over kaarsen en olielampen. Allengs werden ook allerlei lantaarns gebruikt, vervaardigd door de lantaarnmaker.
    In 1595 werd te Amsterdam bepaald, dat elke twaalfde woning aan de straatzijde van een lantaarn met brandende kaars moest zijn voorzien. Dit bleek niet goed te werken. In 1597 werd de eerste lantaarnopsteker aangesteld om voor de straat verlichting zorg te dragen. Daarvoor was al bepaald, dat ieder, die zich na negen uur 's-avonds op straat begaf, een lantaarn bij zich moest dragen. In 1663 ontwierp Jan van der Heyden een houten muurarm met een twee-voet hoge lantaarn met daarin een lamp die met raapolie werd gestookt. Dit begin van de straatverlichting vereiste ook een organisatie voor:
