Overlevering zegt volgens één Zaalberg:
"Dirk Saelberch is afkomstig uit Lennip, een dorpje in het westen van Polen bij Hirschberg, Silezië, toen behorend tot Duitsland,
Dirk Saelberch is naar aller waarschijnlijkheid de oudste zoon van 7 broers. Vanuit Lennip zou hij verhuisd zijn naar Hamburg in Duitsland en daar vandaan naar Leiden als lakenbewerker begonnen".
Ook het boek '100 jaar Zaalberg dekens' stelt dat de oorsprong Silezië is.
In Silezië woonden vele joodse wevers die naar het westen getrokken zijn. Eén overleveringsbron stelt, dat ook de familie Zaalberg van Joodse oorsprong zou zijn. Ik heb echter geen enkele bevestiging kunnen vinden. De voornamen zijn niet bepaald joods.
In Hirschberg werd in 1629 de lutherse kerk "gekatholiseerd". Het is dus niet onwaarschijnlijk, dat vele lutheranen in de periode daarna naar het westen zijn gevlucht.
