    Vrijdag 10 mei 1940. Even na vier uur die middag vlogen drie Duitse vliegtuigen van west naar oost over Tilburg. De journalist Pierre van Beek schreef in zijn dagboek:
    - Ter hoogte van het kerkhof van den Bredascheweg gekomen zag ik boven het Noordelijke deel van de stad drie vliegmachines, zeer hoog voorbijgaan. Zij vlogen van Oost naar West. Ik dacht bij mijzelf op dat moment: "Als ze wat doen kan het hier toch geen kwaad want ze zijn ver genoeg weg". Nauwelijks had ik deze gedachte gehad of ik hoorde een of meer scherpe fluittoonen, gevolgd door een of meerdere knallen. Of ik ook iets heb zien vallen, weet ik niet meer. Ik schoot op het horen van de knal, eventueel knallen, zoo vlug ik kon achter den muur van het kerkhof in de straat op den hoek, waarvan de zaak van Lepelaars gevestigd is, met de bedoeling dekking te zoeken voor eventueel rondvliegende scherven van bommen. Er gebeurde echter niets. toen ik weer eens voor het hek van het kerkhof ging kijken, zag ik een geweldige rookkolom opstijgen. Ik schatte hem ter hoogte van het station of misschien ook in den Besterd. Eerst dacht ik aan brand, doch later meende ik, dat de rookkolom een stofkolom was van een bom, die op een huis was gevallen. Hiermede was ik getuige geweest van de eerste bommen, die er op Tilburg waren gevallen.

    De Luchtbeschermingsdienst meldde dat er vier brisantbommen waren ingeslagen: één in het pand Spoorlaan 118 (fa. Van Gend en Loos), twee in het pand Spoorlaan 110 en één in de Noordstraat.
