    Zijn zoon Jacob Poppen, trouwde in 1603 met Liefgen (Levina) Wuytier en werd daardoor de zwager van Jan Cornelisz. Geelvinck.[7] Samen dreven zij een compagnie op Guinee, maar waagden zich ook aan kaperij als Spaanse of Portugese schepen in de nabijheid kwamen.
    Hij werd als zoon van invloedrijk immigrant tot lid van de vroedschap opgenomen, evenals Jacob J. Hinlopen. Hij was schepen vanaf (1607), maar in 1618 leek het afgelopen, toen een grote groep raadslieden werd ontslagen door stadhouder Maurits. Hij was commissaris van de Stadsbank van Lening (Amsterdam) en weesmeester in 1620. In 1621 werd hij tot Raad bij de Admiraliteit van Amsterdam gekozen, maar hij beëindigde deze functie toen hij burgemeester van Amsterdam werd.
    Poppen was luitenant in de schutterij, heemraad van de Nieuwer-Amstel en hoofdingeland van de Beemster. Toen hij stierf, nog geen vijftig jaar oud, waren Elisabeth en Jan pas 9 en 7 jaar oud. Ze erfden mogelijk 920.000 gulden.

    Commentary: Jacob Poppe(n) (Amsterdam 1576-Amsterdam 1624), the son of one of the founders of the VOC, originally from Holstein, was one of the richest men in Amsterdam. He and the brothers Hendrick and Dirck van Os participated in the diking of the Beemster polder. He married Liefgen Goverts Wuytiers (1586-1622) on 29 June 1603. She was the sister of Dirck Govertsz. Wuytiers of R 7663 of Montias2 and of Annetge Wuijtiers of R 7660 who were both buyers at this auction. Jacob Poppen left a total [including real estate property] of f. 920,000 at his death. According to S.A.C. Dudok van Heel, he reverted to the Roman Catholic religion during the course of his life. His children were Catholic. (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, pp. 285-6).His collection was cited by Carel van Mander (M.J. Bok in Dawn of the Golden Age, Exh. Cat. p. 159). On 25 October 1625, Pieter Egbertsz. Vinck, Dirck Wuytiers, and Jan Baptista de Wael, appeared befpre the Orphan Chamber as guardians over Lysbeth, 10, Jan, 8, and Dieuwer, 6, the three children left by Jacob Poppe, whose mother was Liefgen Goverts Wuytiers (WK 5073/789). On 30 March 1635, joncker WILLEM VAN DER WIELE, heer van de Werve and Nieuwkerck, who had married ELISABETH POPPE on 3 April 1633 (Elias, Vroedschap pp.288-9) was appointed as substitute guardian over the children (WK 6073/513, fol. 27).
