    Hij werd voor de militie ingeschreven in 1879 voor de lichting 1880 en daarbij lootte hij nummer 2. Hij vervulde zijn dienstplicht bij 6e regiment infanterie waar hij bij zijn huwelijk nog diende en hij kreeg van zijn kolonel toestemming voor dit huwelijk. Vermeld werd dat het huwelijk hem niet van zijn verplichtingen verschoonde. Dit dokument was getekend op 15-04-1885 door deze kononel in Breda.
    Het echtpaar woonde Oost Opgaande te Zwinderen wat in vieren gedeelt was door 4 gemeenten - Coevorden Oosterhesselen Hoogeveen en Dalen. Ze zijn op 23-03-1911 van Zwinderen vertrokken naar Barger Oosterveen. Ze betrokken daar een woning (keet) op het punt waar nu de Kunselstraat en de N37 elkaar snijden. Deze weg heette toen Zwarte Dijk en valt nu onder de plaats Klazienaveen. Ze zijn van Zwinderen vertrokken in een praam waar ze via het kanaal naar Barger Oosterveen vertrokken.
