Hij is in 1783 naar Groningen gegaan en studeerde aldaar godgeleerdheid, omdat hij als niet-Lutherse zijn studie in Duitsland niet kon afmaken. Voor de families Cannegieter en Snethlage geldt een dergelijk verhaal.
Hij werd in 1788 predikant te Tjerkgaast, zijn bevestiging tot predikant in september 1788 werd daar 200 jaar later gevierd tijdens een grote Schönfeld-reünie. Vervolgens werd hij predikant te Lutjegast in 1793, 1794 Sleen, 1799 Nuis/Niebert, en in 1801 te Schüttorf net over de grens bij Oldenzaal.
Zijn laatste standplaats werd in 1802 Roderwolde: hoewel dit plaatsje slechts 142 inwoners had, was het een begeerde standplaats vanwege de geringe plichten en de rijkdom van de kerkelijke gemeente. In 1831 was hij de bouwheer van de nieuwe kerk: vanwege verzakking van de veengrond rond het kerkhof was het dorp eigenlijk al een km verder naar het zuiden verplaatst, de oude kerk werd afgebroken en in het huidige dorp werd een nieuwe kerk uit hetzelfde materiaal opgebouwd. Dominee Schönfeld schreef een brief aan koning Willem I voor steun hierbij en kreeg die ook.
Na 39 jaar in Roderwolde ging hij van uit daar in 1841 met emeritaat. Wellicht is hij te Borger overleden ten huize van zijn dochter Sara Johanna Elisabeth en schoonzoon Carl Friedrich Gaerthé, die aldaar arts was.
