Omdat Berndt het kind was van een Duitse vader, werd hij door overheid in kinderheim geplaatst waar zijn grootouders hem opspoorde. In 1945 is Berndt herenigt met moederLeni.
Leni trouwde met Piet Mestrum en emigreerde in 1952 naar Zuid-Afrika en in 1965 werden ze Zuid-afrikaanse burgers, Piet adopteerde Berndt en kreeg de naam Mestrum.
