Er zijn nog altijd zes eendenkooien op Texel. Vroeger was het exploiteren van een kooi een winstgevende zaak. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk, dat er verscheidene families zijn ontstaan, waarbij het beroep kooiker is geworden tot de familienaam Kooiman. Cornelis Maartensz (geb. ca 1610), zoon van Maarten Hendriksz Vlaming, heette gewoonlijk Cornelis Maartensz Kooijman. De kooien bij Noorderbuurt en/of Spang zijn waarschijnlijk verantwoordelijk voor het ontstaan van de naam van één of meer doopsgezinde families Kooiman, die oorspronkelijk in de buurt van Oosterend woonden, waarvan echter bij gebrek aan doopgegevens de onderlinge verwantschap niet meer is te achterhalen.
Tot een van deze geslachten behoorde Gerrit Jacobsz Kooijman (1766-1812), die in 1796 president-schepen en in die functie schout van Texel en Walenburg was.
