Hij is overleden aan waterkanker.

Volgens het loodsenregister geboren in 1709. Na zijn loodsexamen op 12 december 1736 in Amsterdam kreeg hij het loodsnummer 35. Na 1766 vroeg men aan z'n naam "De Oude" toe.

Hij is begraven op 17 januari 1782 in Den Hoorn. Impost f 3,-.

Jan werd lidmaat van de gereformeerde gemeente op 24 mei 1733.
Omdat in het loodsregister onder hetzelfde nummer en met hetzelfde geboortejaar Jan Platvoet staat vermeld, mag men concluderen dat het om dezelfde persoon gaat. Jan kreeg aanvankelijk de familienaam van zijn moeder mee.
Hij werd eigenaaar van de eenzame woning van Jan Platvoet aan 't Horntje.
