Notes about Pieter Hendriksz. Abbenes

Pieter Hendriksz Abbenes was grootschipper. Hij maakte verre reizen, waarbij niet altijd alles naar wens verliep. Zo is bekend dat hij schipper was op "de Christoffel" toen het schip op 29-6-1686 werd genomen. Geladen met wijnen, tabak en papier was "de Christoffel" onderweg van Charente in Frankrijk naar Amsterdam. De bemanning werd gevangen genomen en behandeld als slaaf. Toevallig is overgeleverd dat de Texelaar Cornelis Reijersz Jonker toendertijd als kok op het schip werkte. Waarschijnlijk is de equipage weer vrijgekomen door losgeld te betalen, zo ging dat althans meestal.
Later was Pieter Hendriksz Abbenes schipper van "de juffrouw Cornelia". Zijn schoonzoon Abraham Jansz Schelvis was stuurman op dit schip, voordat hij zelf als schipper ging varen. Pieter bleef actief op de route naar Frankrijk. In 1705 ging "de juffrouw Cornelia" tenminste twee keer heen en weer naar Bordeaux. Op beide reizen werden ze lastig gevallen door Franse kapers, hoewel Pieter wel over de vereiste pas beschikte. Daar werden ondermeer wijn, brandwijn, notenbomen planken, papier, Spaanse zeep, olie, siroop en pruimen geladen. Door een akte van 14.9.1705 (Gemeentearchief Amsterdam), is overgeleverd, dat het schip door Franse kapers werd bezocht.
