Notes about Pieter Bais

Piet Bais, bijgenaamd 'De Italianer', 'De Cowboy' en 'Zwarte Piet' vanwege zijn donker uiterlijk was de oudste zoon uit het gezin van Hendrik Bais en Lammertje Bakker.
Als twaalfjarige jongen moest hij al mee naar zee in de tijd dat er alleen nog schepen voeren met de zeilen en geen motor.
De botters waren nog open d.w.z. er was geen stuurhut en het roer werd buiten bediend. Zelf heeft hij later meerdere botters gehad, waarvan de laatste de HD 56, die in de oorlogsjaren gefungeerd heeft als onderkomen voor de gevluchte familie, die in Den Helder het gevaar liep door de vele bombardementen getroffen te worden.
Deze botter heeft op 01-11-1945 een einde gevonden op de Razende Bol, een zandbank in het Marsdiep, waar het in de mist aan de grond raakte. Door het beddegoed in brand te steken heeft Piet met zijn zoon Petrus en een knecht de aandacht weten te trekken van de kustwacht, die de reddingsboot waarschuwde, waardoor zij gered wrden. De botter was onverzekerd en had aan boord een XIVe eeuws bureautje, dat werd nooit meer boven water gehaald.
Typerend voor hem was, dat hij in de tijd die verliep alvorens de redding kwam eerst maar een visje ging bakken, want zo zei hij: "Je kunt beter verdrinken met een volle maag."
Het huis aan de Binnenhaven 73 moest wegens de doorbraak van de Ruyghweg naar de Buitenhaven gesloopt worden, en er volgde een onteigening.
Nu is er de brede toegangsweg over de Binnenhaven via de Moormanbrug naar de Buitenhaven, de Vissershaven en de Marine Emplacementen. De van Kinsbergenbrug, die onder toezicht staat van het Marine Bewakingskorps geeft toegang tot de oorlogshaven.
Het volgende huis dat hij kocht lag aan de Bassingracht naast de ingang van de Mijnendienst. De zijgevel versierde hij met een boter die hijzelf erop heeft geschilderd. Dat schilderen is later zijn hobby geworden, en velen heeft hij een plezier gedaan met een schilderstukje, voornamelijk zeegezichten, met zeilschepen. Na de dood van zijn vrouw Sien is hij een paar jaar alleen blijven wonen. Hij stond al ingeschreven bij het bejaardenhuis 'De Golfstroom', toen hij nog een cruise maakte naar de Middellandse Zee en Israël. Het heeft hem altijd aangetrokken om nog eens het land te bezoeken waar zijn bijzondere belangstelling naar uitging, als bijbelkenner en als Theosoof.
Zijn laatste jaren heeft hij doorgebracht in het verpleeghuis 'Den Koogh', waar zijn geest langzaam achteruit ging, tot zijn dood in 1977.
Op 27-12-1955 verdronk zijn zoon Pé in een vliegende storm. Hij viel overboord en kon niet meer gered worden. Hij liet een vrouw en drie kinderen na.
