Graaf van Rennes (958), Vannes dankzij de hulp van bisschop Oscand van Vannes (970). Verslaat 981 Hoël I, graaf van Nantes en hertog van Bretagne, in de eerste slag bij Conquereuil. Daarna is Conan de feitelijke machthebber in Bretagne. Verwerft in 990 het graafschap Nantes. Noemt zich in 990 Princeps Britannorum, in een schenking aan Mont St-Michel. Wordt verslagen door zijn zwager Fulco van Anjou in de tweede slag van Conquereuil. Zijn rechterhand wordt afgeslagen, hij geeft zich over maar sterft dezelfde dag.
