Na gestudeerd te hebben voor timmerman in Alkmaar, Willem vertrok naar Venlo op 17 jarige le

eftijd en was werkzaam in de mijnen en bruggenbouw in het zuiden van Nederland.

Gedurende de mobilisatie was hij in het leger, gestationeerd aan de grens van België. Hij was als sergeant gedemo

biliseerd en later werd commandant van de militie in het dorp 't Veld. Allerlei ammunitie en geweren waren in het huis opgeslagen, die werden gebruikt voor oefeningen van de reserve.

In de malai

se was hij gedwongen iets anders te doen, en begon te werken bij zwager Cees de Boer in de tuin, nadat hij een poosje in de deurenfabriek van de Firma Boekel had gewerkt.

Later heeft hij z'n eig

en grond gekocht en een huis gebouwd aan de Zwarteweg. Hij teelde pootaardappelen, groente en kool. Ook had hij experimentele tulpen bedden, waar verschillende soorten bollen werden geteeld voor de mo

oiste bloemen. Later werd er ook bloemen zaad gekweekt.

Willem was twee keer gekozen als raadslid van de gemeente Oude Niedorp, en was ook voorzitter van het Tjadinkrijtpolder bestuur. Ondanks d

at hij het light in één oog had verloren, was hij een grote liefhebber van lezen. Hij was een mede oprichter van het dorps bibliotheek in't Veld en voor vele jaren een bestuurslid.

Toen het bejaa

rden tehuis "Maria Mater" werd geopened was Willem een van de eerste inwoners en heeft daar z'n laatste jaren doorgebracht.
