    Monika ging in de vroege ochtend van eind december om ongeveer 6 uur in de ochtend sneeuw ruimen voor het huis. Omdat zij geestelijk in de war was had zij zich niet goed gekleed. Ze was met korte mouwen en korte broek hiermee bezig en is onderkoeld geraakt. Door de onderkoeling is ze flauw gevallen en in de sneeuw terecht gekomen. Toen Helmut haar vond had ze al een hartstilstand. Carlos had meteen eerste hulp geboden, maar dit mocht niet baten. Toen de hulp diensten arriveerden kregen zij het hart van Monika wel aan de gang.
    Monika werd meegenomen naar het ziekenhuis. De schade als gevolg van zuurstofgebrek in de hersenen was zo erg, dat Monika daar uiteindelijk toch aan overleden is.

Monika is geboren in Preußisch Holland in Ostpreußen. Toen de oorlog afgelopen was werden de Duitse inwoners uit het gebied verdreven door het rode leger. Hierbij zijn ongeveer 2,5 miljoen mensen bij omgekomen. Zo zijn ook de grootouders van Monika tijdens de vlucht omgekomen. De restanten van het gezin zijn uiteindelijk in Essen terecht gekomen.
Preußisch Holland is een gebied waar in het 15de, 16de eeuw vele mensen zich vestigden in verband met geloofsvervolging. Dit waren vele mensen vanuit Holland. De naam Schmitz is in Polen een niet veel voorkomende naam, Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid had Monika dan ook Nederlandse voorouders.
