Tijdens de 2de Wereld Oorlog werd Willem Smit te werk gesteld in Duisburg. Het gezin zat dus zonder vader en kost winnaar.

Tijdens de hongerwinter was ook nog de brandstof voor de gemalen in het land op met als gevolg dat deze stil kwamen te liggen. De diverse polders begonnen vol te lopen door de regenval. Familie Smit woonde aan de veldweg in Westzaan. Deze weg lag in de IJpolder. Het waterpeil in deze polder begon ook te stijgen. Het water liep bijna het huis binnen aan de veldweg. Door al deze omstandigheden werden de familieleden elders ondergebracht. Berber kwam in de kost bij haar moeder Antje Nijdam. Dirk Smit kwam in de kost bij zijn Opa en Oma Dirk Cornelis Smit en Johanna Huijsman. Wim Smit kwam in de kost bij zijn oom Foppe Kuypers.

Terwijl Willem Smit te werk gesteld was in Duisburg werd het hele Ruhrgebied hevig gebombadeerd door de geallieerden. Willem besloot om samen met een voor ons onbekend persoon te vluchten. In de nacht trokken ze telkens verder richting de grens. Aangekomen bij de Nederlandse grens zijjn ze een poos ondergedoken bij mensen.
