Child(ren):
(kapt. P.Slierendrecht) in 1884
In August 1880, Monsieur Emile Robin of Paris, a philanthropist having a
particular interest in the welfare of seamen, wrote to the then National
Lifeboat Institution (now the Royal National Lifeboat Institute - RNLI),
saying he wished to establish an award for saving life at sea. The
National Lifeboat Institution passed his letter to us and in
consequence, the Society's Secretary visited Monsieur Robin in Paris.
Subsequently, the Emile Robin Award was set up by the Society, through a
special trust, to be presented to the natural born or naturalised
British Captain and Chief Officer of a British vessel, who rescued
survivors of a vessel, whether British or foreign, and who icurred the
greatest peril effecting such a rescue. ????iThe award consists of a cash
sum, a suitably inscribed barometer and a scroll. ????iIt is understood that
Monsieur Robin founded similar awards in France, Holland and Italy.
