De Rotterdammer Lazarus is 15 jaar oud als hij in dienst treedt van de Nederlandse spoorwegen (1904). Zijn oudere broer Gustaaf is dan¬â€ net een jaar met ontslag bij de NS. Lazarus is werkzaam als leerling klerk met als standplaats Rotterdam. Hij verdient 2,50 florijn per week. Elk jaar komt daar een verhoging van 1,50 florijn bij. In 1906 wordt Lazarus eervol ontslagen op eigen verzoek. Hij is¬â€ 17 jaar oud.
Lazarus Gosschalk¬â€ trouwt met Sientje Frank op dinsdag 21 oktober 1919 in Hilversum.¬â€ Een zonnige en koele (max 14,9¬âˆžC) dag met veel zon, een onbewolke lucht en zwakke wind.¬â€ Op 24 januari 1934 vertrekken Lazarus en Sientje vanuit woonplaats Rotterdam naar Amsterdam om daar een bestaan op te bouwen. De woning aan de West-kruiskade 60a gaat over naar Philippus en Eva, de broer en zus van Lazarus.¬â€ 
Lazarus noemt zichzelf Louis. Sientje noemt zichzelf Sienie. Het echtpaar woont¬â€ vanaf¬â€ 1940 in¬â€ de Rivierenbuurt in Amsterdam. De moeder van Sientje, Neeltje Frank-van Rood, woont in Amsterdam bij het echtpaar in huis. Waarschijnlijk sinds oktober 1939 wanneer haar¬â€ echtgenoot¬â€ Jacob Frank overlijdt.¬â€ In 1942 staan Lazarus en Sientje ingeschreven¬â€ op de Rijnstraat 154-I hoog in Amsterdam-Oost.
In de periode augustus 1942 tot september 1943 worden Joodse mensen uit de Rivierenbuurt aangehouden en weggevoerd. Op 30 november 1942 worden Lazarus, Sientje en haar moeder Neeltje op last van de Duitse bezetter verplicht verhuisd naar de Hertzogstraat 6 I hoog in Amsterdam. Vanaf die tijd staat ook de schoonzus¬â€ van Lazarus op dat adres ingeschreven, Klara Gosschalk-Calff. Lazarus schrijft een brief aan familie in Den Haag over de verplichte verhuizing naar de Herzogstraat.
