Notes about Dr Jan Herman van Heemskerck Düker

Vertrekt in 1899 naar Rotterdam, ws. voor studie, en keert in 1903 terug (als ‘student’). Hoewel hij in augustus 1905 toegelaten wordt op de ‘Amersfoortsche school’ vertrekt hij volgens het bevolkingsregister in 1905 naar Delft, waar hij tot en met 1907 verblijft. In dat jaar vertrekt hij (samen met zijn zuster Christina) naar Philadelphia, waar hij tot juli 1911 blijft. Hij is daar als commissaris betrokken bij de Hollandsche Vereeniging, die onder leiding stond van C.W. van der Hoogt. Elsa Tannock-Van Amstel, zijn stiefdochter, meldt dat hij in Philadelphia zijn tandartsstudie voltooide, hoewel hij bij zijn huwelijk in datzelfde jaar nog ‘candidaat-tandarts’ wordt genoemd. Ook in de burgerlijke stand kent men hem in dat jaar als ‘student’. Bovendien blijkt hij op 2 mei 1913 ‘bevorderd tot tandmeester’ te zijn na een academisch examen in Utrecht. Maar hij is wel de enige van de kinderen die - net als zijn moeder - remonstrants genoemd wil worden.

In 1915 heeft hij zich als tandarts (‘Doct. surg. dent.’) gevestigd aan de Oude Enghweg 10.

Uiteindelijk laat hij in 1916 door zijn zwager Jan Hendrik Plantenga, architect, een kasteel van een huis annex praktijk bouwen aan de Ministerlaan (later Minister Hartsenlaan) nummer 10, dat er nog steeds staat. Het was een luxe, modern huis; volgens dochter Nel het eerste woonhuis in Hilversum met elektrisch licht.

Zijn scheiding van Jo Plantenga kwam voor de kinderen onverwacht; zij kregen ‘s ochtends te horen dat zij na school niet terug moesten gaan naar de Ministerlaan, maar naar de Gijsbrecht van Amstelstraat 415, waar hun moeder ging wonen. Spoedig daarna hertrouwde hij met Nettie Kloppers - in Gretna Green, Schotland, omdat beiden nog te kort waren gescheiden.

De tandarts leefde op tamelijk grote voet. Hij had al vroeg een auto, zijn huis was zelfs voor Hilversumse begrippen groot en modern. Greet Rörik weet te melden dat hij vooral het geld van de Plantenga’s er graag doorjaste. Bij zijn dood liet hij voornamelijk schulden na.

Jan Herman stierf aan een hartkwaal op weg naar Zweden, waar het echtpaar vrienden had wonen. Hij werd daar gecremeerd, maar zijn as werd in Hilversum uitgestrooid. [2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
