      Nog zie ik haar verschijnen in de rectorskamer, als sollicitante, door mij uitgenodigd, voor waarneming van de taak van onze Engelse leraar. De officiële bespreking duurde niet lang; ik was terstond tot de conclusie gekomen, dat de proef zeer weinig risico zou geven. We praatten nog wat over oude relaties: het was gebleken, dat haar vader een van mijn schoolkameraden was geweest.
      Inderdaad, de proef gelukte volkomen. Het was in het voorjaar van1940, toen zij voor het eerst bij ons voor de klasse stond; zij was onmiddellijk opgenomen in de schoolgemeenschap van lerarenkamer en klasselokaal.
      Na enkele weken ging zij weer weg, toen de collega, wiens plaats zij had ingenomen, in de school terugkeerde. Maar wij gevoelden, dat zij in ons midden niet zo spoedig zou worden vergeten, als gewoonlijk geschiedt met plaatsvervangers. Doch - zij keerde terug, tot aller vreugde.

      In September 1940, toen de bezetter nog niet zijn ware gedaante had getoond, werden haar op mijn voorstel enige lesuren opgedragen in het Frans: zij bezat de academische bevoegdheid voor beide talen en ik wist, dat die bevoegdheid volledige bekwaamheid in zich sloot, ook in de practische taalbeheersing.
      Toen begon ik al spoedig voor haar positie te vrezen; de sluwe dreiging tegen wie men niet-Ariërs durfde noemen, kondigde zich weldra aan. Wij maakten nagenoeg allen ons schuldig aan de onvergefelijke fout der ondertekening van de beruchte verklaring van niet-Jood zijn. Geen drie maanden bleef zij meer in ons midden; met onverstoorbare opgewektheid trok zij zich terug, toen het bevel daartoe haar bereikte. Nog enige maanden heeft zij les gegeven aan het Joodse lyceum te Rotterdam, haar geboorteplaats. Totdat het gevaar te groot werd, en zij in Amsterdam een schuilplaats wist te vinden. Maar haar levenslust maakte het haar onmogelijk in het duister te blijven; zij werd ontdekt, misschien door verraad. In September 1943 werd zij naar Polen gevoerd. Aan de ouders was een geliefd kind ontroofd, aan haar vriendenkring een zeer gewaardeerde kameraad, aan de school een uitnemende lerares.
