    Berühmte Expressionisten in der Sammlung "Cohen-Umbach-Vogts
    Drei Menschen – durch eine Kunstsammlung verbunden – durch das Dritte Reich auseinander gerissen. Die expressionistische Sammlung Dr. Walter Cohens wurde als ‚entartet’ verfemt, im Versteck zerstört und in der Nachkriegszeit rekonstruiert.
    So gibt sie auch Zeugnis vom Schicksal der Sammler: Dr. Walter Cohen, angesehener Düsseldorfer Museumsdirektor und Förderer der jungen Avantgarde in der Weimarer Republik, wurde ab 1933 als Jude verfolgt und 1942 im Konzentrationslager Dachau ermordet. Margarete Umbachs Ehe mit Cohen hielt dem Druck der NS-Diktatur nicht stand. Die Sammlung Cohens wurde in den letzten Kriegsjahren im Elsass zerstört.
    Richard Vogts, der Umbach 1942 geheiratet hatte, baute mir ihr zusammen im Nachkriegsdeutschland eine neue Existenz auf. Durch gezielte Kunstankäufe nach dem Vorbild Cohens versuchten Umbach und Vogts, die ursprüngliche Sammlung zu rekonstruieren.

    Nach dem Tod von Richard Vogts 1984 kam diese bedeutende Kunstsammlung als Nachlass in die Sammlung des Museums am Burghof in Lörrach. Die Ausstellung präsentiert Werke führender Expressionisten wie Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Paula Modersohn-Becker und anderen im Kontext der bewegenden Lebensgeschichten ihrer Sammler.
