    SJENG VOORST (76): Mijn oudste broer Sjo en zijn vrouw begonnen een café in de straat. Er was ook een uitdrukking - Op nao Sjo en Lèneke! - en dan wist iedereen hoe laat het was. Ik bracht het bier rond in het café. Er werd wel gevochten, maar dat gebeurt nu ook. In de Smedenstraat waren ook publieke vrouwen, maar daar hadden de mensen uit de Stokstraat weinig mee te maken. De polderjongens uit Holland, die eerst de Wilhelminabrug hebben gebouwd en daarna de Servaasbrug hebben opgeknapt, hebben het bont gemaakt. Die gingen naar de hoeren en zaten iedere dag na het werk in het café. Iemand uit de Stokstraat had daar geen geld voor.

Johanna werd door de Nazi's vanuit Polen naar Duitsland gebracht waar ze moest werken in een werkkamp. Daar ontmoette ze Sjeng die daar moest werken. Sjeng is gevlucht met Johanna omdat zij zou worden gedood. Via Zwitserland, Italië, Frankrijk en Belgie zijn ze naar Maastricht gekomen. Het laatste deel van de reis naar Maastricht is met paard en wagen geweest.
