Notes about Reinout Iii van Bourgondië

Reinoud III van Bourgondië (1093-1148) was de oudste zoon van graaf Stefanus I van Bourgondië en Beatrix van Lotharingen.

In 1102 volgde hij zijn vader op als graaf van Mâcon. In 1125 werd hij, als toezichter op zijn achterneef, de jonge graaf Willem III van Bourgondië, co-graaf van Bourgondië. Na de moord op de jonge Willem werd hij de enige graaf van Bourgondië.

Na een strijd met Koenraad van Zähringen om de voogdij over Koenraad van Hohenstaufen, verloort hij wel alle gebieden ten oosten van de Jura.

Reinoud huwde in 1130 met Agatha van Lotharingen, dochter van Simon I van Lotharingen, en werd de vader van dochter Beatrix I, die later de grafelijke waardigheid erfde.

De benaming van de streek, Franche-Comté zou afgeleid zijn van zijn titel franc-comte = vrijmoedige graaf
