Fredrik Joseph Fels werd geboren in 1785 of 1786 in Neuwied am Rhein, dichtbij Koblenz in Duitsland en komt rond 1800 naar Amsterdam. Hij trouwt in 1809 met Anna Dorothea Kühn uit Amsterdam. Zij woonden in de Grote Oostenburgerstraat te Amsterdam en kregen (voorzover is nagegaan) vier kinderen.

In 1820 overlijdt Anna Dorothea en in 1821 trouwt Fredrik Joseph opnieuw, nu met de 18-jarige Anna Catharina Risch (geb. 1803). Ook zij kregen nog 4 kinderen waarvan de laatste in 1831 wordt geboren. Fredrik Joseph Fels overlijdt een jaar later op 13 september 1832.
