      De Burgerlijke Stand - het door de overheid registreren van geboorte, huwelijk en overlijden - begon in Engeland en Wales op 1 juli 1837.Lokale registratie districten hadden de jurisdictie om burgerlijke gebeurtenissen te registreren maar zij waren verplicht om elk kwartaal kopieën van hun gegevens door te zenden naar het algemene registratie bureau (General Register Office of GRO) in Londen. De GRO maakte indexen voor deze records die zijn gerangschikt op gebeurtenis, jaar, kwartaal en vervolgens alfabetisch gesorteerd op achternaam.De index bevat de naam van de bruid of bruidegom, het district waar de registratie plaatsvond en referentie informatie (boek- en paginanummers). Bruiden en bruidegommen zijn beiden in de index opgenomen, maar zijn afzonderlijk vermeld onder hun eigen persoonlijke inschrijvingen.Met de gegevens uit de index kan, tegen betaling, een kopie van de huwelijksakte van de persoon worden opgevraagd bij de GRO via hun Certificate Ordering Service.
