Volgens het kolonistenregister is hij "gedeserteerd", vertrekdatum 27-12-1853, hij was toen 14 jaar oud.
Waarschijnlijk is hij toen naar Almelo ge gaan en daar in 1861 getrouwd met Hendrikje Averink
