Rommert Jans neemt op 17 december 1811 te Witmarsum de naam WEERSTRA aan. 

Wat de naam Weerstra betreft, vermeldt w.g. J.F. Weerstra (1875-1949) het volgende: 'Waar het vrij zeker is dat de [voor-]ouders Rommert Oepkes en Antje Jans op een boerderij in de WEEREN, ofwel Wonserwaarden, hebben gewoond, waarop hun zoon Sytze ook jaren gewoond heeft, ligt het voor de hand dat zowel Jan als ook zijn zwager Marten hun geslachtsnaam daaraan hebben ontleend [waarbij moet worden aangetekend dat Jan is overleden voor 1811 en pas zijn zoon Rommert Jans die naam officieel aanneemt en laat registreren bij de burgerlijke stand]. Trijntje Rimmerts, de vrouw van Jan Rommerts, heeft zelf nimmer een eigen geslachtsnaam gehad [zie notitie onder haar naam].'
