Hij trouwt in op 26-jarige leeftijd bij de 38-jarige Teune van Harxen, weduwe van Manus Spekschoor en moeder van vijf zonen in de leeftijd van 4 tot 13 jaar. Bij de volkstelling in 1830 staan zij ingeschreven op huisnr. 84 te Zieuwent.  In datzelfde register staat zijn geboorteplaats vermeld als 'ter Borgh'.

Bij het huwelijk van Gerrit zijn vier getuigen aanwezig: Hendrick Wegenborg, Teunes Wolters, Garret Verwoold en Manus Hulzevoord, allen landbouwer te Lichtenvoorde. In de huwelijksakte staat vermeld dat bruidegom en zijn vader, bruid en hare moeder en getuigen hebben verklaard niet te kunnen schrijven.

Vernoemd als Gerret Schoenmaker in een testamentaire beschikking, opgemaakt door notaris de Both op 14 juni 1843 op verzoek van Gerrit Jan Schoemaker.

Ondertekent bij de executie van zijn vader's testament (1857) met een kruisje omdat hij niet heeft leren lezen en schrijven.

Na het overlijden van zijn echtgenote woont Gerrit de laatste twee jaar van zijn leven bij zijn zoon Bernardus.
