Notes about Romanos I Lekapenos

Was van boerenafkomst, klom op tot oppervlootvoogd en veroverde in 919 de leiding van de staat. In datzelfde jaar werd hij tot medekeizer gekroond, naast de legitieme keizer Constantijn VII, die hij met zijn dochter Helena deed huwen. Toen hij de legitieme keizer boven zijn eigen zoons ging verkiezen, werd hij door dezen in 944 onttroond en naar een klooster gerelegeerd, waar hij als monnik stierf. Door zijn militaire (strijd tegen de Arabieren) en diplomatieke begaafdheid, zijn politieke gematigdheid en zijn uitmuntende keuze van medewerkers geldt Romanus Lecapenus als een van de meest hoogstaande figuren uit de rij van de Byzantijnse keizers
