    Merijn groeide op aan de Beijmoersedijk als jongste zoon van Kees Paulus en Mieke van Aert. Hij werkte thuis bij z’n vader in de akkerbouw.
    Hij was een ambitieuze en levenlustige man.
    Merijn was getrouwd met Mien van Elzakker, ze hadden 4 kinderen, Kees, Mia, Correke en Leentje.
    Tot begin 1952 woonde het gezin in bij de ouders van Mien, daarna zijn ze verhuisd naar de polder.
    De moeder van Merijn was overleden en hij heeft toen het bedrijf overgenomen van zijn vader.
    Op de avond voor de Ramp hadden Merijn en z’n hoog zwangere vrouw nog een hele avond geholpen bij de schoonouders in het cafe.
    Door het slechte weer was het onverantwoord om samen naar huis te gaan, ze zijn toen thuis gebracht door Ghiel van Eekeren en Toon Gijzen.
    Allen met de fiets aan de hand want door de harde wind was het niet meer mogelijk om te fietsen.
    Het was toen ongeveer 1 uur ’s nachts, dit is het laatste wat van hen bekend is.
    Oorzaak: Verdronken
