    Hendricus wordt geboren op 14 juni 1905 in Bergen op Zoom als zoon van hovenier Johannes Withagen en Elisabeth Hagenaars. Hij werkt in Bergen op Zoom als voermansknecht en trouwt in 1930 met Maria Luijsterburg uit Woensdrecht.

    Als in de loop van 1939 de oorlogsdreiging voor Nederland sterk toeneemt, wordt hij onder de wapenen geroepen en ingedeeld bij het 4-3 Grensbataljon, dat als onderdeel van de verdediging van de Vesting Holland bij Dordrecht wordt gelegerd.

    Op 10 mei 1940 valt het Duitse leger Nederland binnen. De Luftwaffe vliegt voor de grondtroepen uit om strategische doelen verderop in Holland in te nemen en Nederland zo tot een snelle overgave te dwingen. Zo komt het die eerste dagen ook direct tot felle gevechten rond Dordrecht vanwege de daar gelegen bruggen.

    Op 12 mei krijgt Hendricus als onderdeel van een kleine sectie opdracht om het gemaal ten zuiden van Wieldrecht te saboteren, maar daar belanden ze in een zwaar vuurgevecht met Duitse troepen. Hendricus raakt dan zwaargewond en wordt afgevoerd naar Dordrecht, waar hij drie dagen later, op 15 mei, bezwijkt aan zijn verwondingen.

    Hendricus is 34 jaar geworden en vindt zijn laatste rustplaats op het Militair ereveld Grebbeberg in Rhenen.
