Jan had enorm aanzien binnen Bergen op Zoom. Zo bezat hij een Hoeve annex herberg op de grens van Borgvliet en Zuidgeest. Hij was ruim tien jaar gemeenteman,lid van het gilde Sint Sebastiaan.
In 1732 kocht hij het hof en erf te Borgvliet, genaamd: "de Rooden Leeuw"
