    Gerrit is blijkbaar een keer op jonge leeftijd en een keer op latere leeftijd getrouwd. Hierdoor is zijn vermoedelijke geboortejaar redelijk in te schatten. Het zal waarschijnlijk tussen 1672 en 1681 zijn geweest. Bij beide huwelijken wordt expliciet vermeld dat Gerrit in Culemborg geboren is. Tot nog toe is geen vermelding van een Gerrit Jans (Schepen) in die periode gevonden, maar het geraadpleegde DTB-register is een afschrift en het is niet helemaal kompleet.

Op Culemborg 18-11-1697 zijn getrouwd: Gerrit Jansz van der Wall en Jannetje Meeuwsdr de Keijser, beiden geboren te Culemborg en daar wonend. Zij zijn op 31-10-1697 in ondertrouw gegaan.

In eerste instantie lijkt de trouwvermelding van Gerrit Jansz en Jannetje Mees niet te kloppen. Immers, waarom heeft Gerrit de achternaam 'van der Wal'? Als echter naar de context wordt gekeken, dan blijkt het toch om Gerrit Jansz Schepen te gaan. Misschien doelde de vermelding er op dat Jan bij een Wal woonde en betrof het helemaal geen achternaam. Bij de doop van dochter Marie wordt de achternaam vermeld. Ook bij het tweede huwelijk wordt toch duidelijk naar het eerste gerefereerd en word de achternaam Scheepen gebruikt.
