Rombout gehuwd met Sybilla Mommers vestigt zich in het begin van de 17e eeuw te Grotehrath, bij Geilenkirchen.
Grothenrath ligt enkele kilometers over de Duitse grens, precies oost van Brunssum.
In Nijmegen werden op uitnodiging van de magistraat vele Hervormden uit Aken, Gulik en Limburg, burger van deze stad om de geloofsvervolging te ontkomen.
Nijmegen was in die tijd bijna ontvolkt door de pest.
De familie Scherer/Scherers/Scheers heeft daar ook gebruik van gemaakt.
