Zijn kleinzoon Cornelis Jz (Kees), geboren in 1902, schrijft over hem:
Mijn opa was timmerman. Dat betekende 's morgens om vijf uur opstaan en dan te voet met een werkkistje de polder in, om bij een boer de een of andere klus op te knappeen. 's Avonds kwam hij tegen zeven uur thuis, ging zich wassen, ging eten en vervolgens rookte hij hangend over de halve voordeur en kijkend naar de voorbijgangers, een pijpje. Toen in Volendam de export van vis tot ontwikkeling kwam, wist mijn opa contacten te leggen met deze handel. Hij maakte veel spieringkistjes. Met grote hoeveelheden gingen die naar Volendam. Dat zaakje draaide goed. Ik kan mij herinneren dat hij - behalve zijn twee zoons Piet en Jaap - ook nog twee knechten had.
Hij had in zijn huiskamer op de schoorsteen, waarop twee beeldjes stonden en waarboven een kruisbeeld hing, een houten kistje staan vol bidprentjes. Dagelijks bad hij "voor allen die in het kistje lagen" vijf onze-vaders en vijf wees-gegroeten en telkens erbij: Heer, geef de gelovige zielen de eeuwige rust".
