Louis Richard is geboren in 1899 in Salatiga (40 km van Semarang). Lilly (Louise Theresia) in 1904 in
Semarang. Ze verloofden zich op 1 augustus 1925 in Medan, Sumatra en trouwden op 3 december
1925 in Menado in Sulawesi. Maar voordat dit gebeurde was Louis ingeschreven in gemeente
Schoten (bij het Kleverpark, nu Haarlem). Vanuit deze gemeente ging hij bij het KNIL (Koninklijk
Nederlands Indisch Leger) in dienst. Hij was rond zijn 16 e jaar een aantal jaren in Nederland,
waarschijnlijk voor de middelbare school. Op 19 januari 1924 (dan 25 jaar) is hij naar Indie
vertrokken op het schip de Grotius.
