Hendrik vertrok in juni 1871 naar Winterswijk (Bron: Bevolkingsregister Rekken, bandnr.56, fol. 133). In 1873 mocht de 21-jarige Hendrik in eerste instantie geen belijdenis doen, omdat zijn aanstaande vrouw zwanger was. Later werd het wel toegestaan en werd de baby gedoopt (Bron: Een eeuw op weg, 100 jaar gereformeerde kerk Eibergen-Rekken, 1902-2002.) In Winterswijk vestigde Hendrik een schoenmakerij met uiteindelijk 9 knechten aan de Meddosestraat (Bron: G.Jan Rhebergen).
