    Bij een brand op 22 maart 1840 op het Schild te Goor ontstond grote schade aan het daar gelegen armenhuis De Kapelle, maar ook aan een drietal belendende percelen, waarin woonachtig waren Willem NIJLAND, de weduwe van Berend ten ZIJTHOFF (Geertruid ROTTINK) en de weduwe van Arne ten DONKELAAR. De slachtoffers waren allen behoeftig en niet tegen brand verzekerd. Toch werd geprobeerd uit de aanwezige armenkas iets te vergoeden. Daartoe moest nauwkeurig worden opgegeven wat er precies was verbrand. Zo was de garderobe van de huiswever Wilem NIJLAND grotendeels verloren gegaan, evenals diverse meubelstukken, een spinnewiel, drie weverskammen en vijftig stuks garen. Een lijst met de verloren gegane goederen van Geretruid ROTTINK kon niet worden teruggevonden in het Goorse gemeentearchief.
