    In Nieuwpoort is op 75-jarige leeftijd Georges Mommerency overleden. ,,De facteur'' was een BV avant-la-lettre en werd verkozen omdat heel Nieuwpoort de postman kende. Hij bleef burgemeester van Nieuwpoort van 1971 tot 1995. Hij werd ook senator en provincieraadslid. Georges Mommerency had een droom, die hij koesterde tot de laatste dag: Nieuwpoort op de kaart zetten.
    In die bijna kwarteeuw maakte Mommerency van Nieuwpoort de stad van vandaag, met bijzonder veel aandacht voor de haven, de pleziervaart, de visserij en het (visserij)onderwijs. Veel van zijn dromen bleven bij dromen. Ooit pleitte hij voor een Oceanografisch Instituut in Nieuwpoort, waar het zeewetenschappelijk universitair onderzoek gebundeld werd. Ook ijverde hij voor kustcruises naar Oostende maar ook naar Duinkerke.
    Zijn politiek einde werd bezegeld door gekrakeel binnen de inmiddels tot SP omgedoopte BSP. Mommerency bleef socialist, maar noemde zijn nieuwe politieke groepering eerst Nieuwpoort 2000 en nadien Inzet. Bij beide laatste verkiezingen werd hij ook effectief verkozen, maar hij besloot niet te zetelen.
    Vriend en vijand kenden Mommerency als een politiek correcte figuur. Vorig jaar nog trad hij voor de derde keer in het huwelijk trad met Carmen Vanheyste. Vrijdag werd in alle intimiteit door de familie van hem afscheid genomen. De Gentenaar 25/01/2003
