August De Meirleir werd geboren als onwettige zoon van Florentina De Meirleir. Zij was een zus van voorouder Mathilde De Meirleir. Florentia woonde, net zoals haar zus Mathilde in de Eeckhoutdriesstraat.


 


August was mandenmaker en besloot op 18-jarige leeftijd om als beroepsvrijwilliger in het leger te gaan. Hij was soldaat bij het 2de Gidsenregiment. Drie jaar later, in april 1917 werd August geraakt met een kogel in de lendenstreek.  Hij sneuvelde aan de gevolgen hiervan in Oudstuyvekenskerke en werd begraven in Steenkerke
