Op 15 augustus 1801 werd in Schelle ene Jean-Corneille geboren als zoon van Jean-Baptiste De Roeck, een wever, en zijn huisvrouw Barbara Pintens. Het koppel was nog niet gehuwd wanneer Jean-Corneille werd geboren. Om een onbekende reden zouden Jean-Baptiste en Barbara Pintens pas zo’n 32 jaar later trouwen. Jean-Cornelle ging aan de slag als arbeider. Hij huwde op 30-jarige leeftijd in zijn woonplaats Schelle met de één jaar jongere Nielse dienstmeid Sophia Van Der Goolen. Zo’n twintig dagen eerder was deze Sophia bevallen van hun zoon, Frans (°1831). Nadien verhuisd het koppel naar Niel. Daar bevalt Sophia van een dochter, Anna Maria (°1834). Drie jaar later overlijd Sophia in Niel. Vijf maand na het overlijden van Sophia, hertrouwd Jean-Corneille met de dienstmeid Joanna-Theresia Van Onckelen. Samen krijgen ze 4 kinderen; Joannes Baptist, Philippus, Maria Catharina en Carolus. Het gezin woonde in Niel tot 1844, en trok dat jaar naar Schelle. In datzelfde jaar overlijd Frans, de oudste zoon van Jan Corneel, op 13-jarige leeftijd. Jan-Corneel is op dat moment aan de werk als dagloner en arbeider. Hij was ongeletterd. In 1846 komt ook zijn tweede vrouw, Joanna Theresia Van Onckelen te overlijden in hun woning. In de bevolkingsregisters vinden we enkel nog zoon Philippus terug met zijn vader Jan-Corneel. Wat er op kan wijzen dat de andere kinderen ook gestorven zijn. Jan-Corneel en zoon Philippus blijven in Schelle juni 1848. Dan keren ze opnieuw naar Niel. Jan Corneel, die toen als steenbakkerswerkman werkte, overlijd in zijn woning in de Dorpstraat 30 te Niel.
