Frans Smets leidde generaties journalisten op, zowel op De Standaard (waar hij van 1962 tot begin 1968 werkte), als later op De Financieel-Ekonomische Tijd.Smets werd op 21 januari 1912 geboren in Ruisbroek-Sauvegarde. Hij behoorde tot de generatie 'selfmade men' die hun stempel hebben gedrukt op de ontwikkeling van de Vlaamse journalistiek. Als jongeman begon hij, in de jaren dertig, zijn loopbaan op de redaktie van De Dag, de eerste Vlaamse tabloidkrant (die op korte tijd erg populair werd). Smets bleef er ook tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werken, wat hem achteraf problemen opleverde..
