Gustaaf De Roeck werd geboren in Niel. Men kende hem ook als “Staf van Marie van Sander Viool. Op 16 juli 1935 huwde Gustaaf met de Bornemse Elza Van Ranst. De twee kende elkaar al sinds kind. Gustaaf’s ouders woonde een tijdje in dezelfde straat als die van Elza, in Niel. De ouders waren goed bevriend en bleven steeds contact houden.


Fabriekswerker Gustaaf  en zijn vrouw  Elza vestigde zich in Niel.In 1936 kregen ze  daar hun zoon, Harry. Harry werd genoemd naar Gustaaf’s vader Hendrik die enkele jaren eerder was overleden aan een elektrocutie bij zijn werk op “De Zilveren”.


Wanneer in 1940 de oorlog uitbreekt, werd Gustaaf opgeroepen. Elza verhuisde dan voor een tijdje naar haar ouderlijk huis in de Nieuwe Kouterstraat in Bornem, samen met haar zoontje. Gustaaf diende toen als Sergeant maar werd kort daarop krijgsgevangen genomen. Hij werd uitgeleverd naar Duitsland nabij Nürenberg. Daar kreeg hij verschillende taken. Zo moest hij zwaar werk verrichten bij een plaatselijke boer.


In oktober 1940 bevind Gustaaf zich in een concentratiekamp te Trier. Wij werd vrijgelaten en keerde terug naar huis. Het gezin woonde tot ca. 1942 in Niel.Wanneer hun zoon zo’n 6-jaar oud is verhuizen ze naar de Rijkenhoek in Bornem. Gustaaf werkte als chauffeur bij koffiebranderij “Succes Koffie” in Niel.  Het koppel verhuisd nadien naar de Broekstraat 43 in Bornem.


Na de oorlog krijgen Gustaaf en Elza nog twee kinderen: Francois (°1946) en Nicole (°1955). Gustaaf ging dan aan de slag chauffeur bij het olieverwerkend bedrijf “De Petrol” in Hemiksem. Hij was daar onder andere vrachtwagenchauffeur. Het laatste jaar voor zijn pensioen kreeg Gustaaf een werkongeval. Tijden het vullen van tankwagens loopt hij een hoofdwonde en enkele breuken op. Hierdoor ging hij iets sneller op pensioen. Ondertussen blijft Gustaaf wel nog enkele kleine jobs doen. Zo was hij ook taxichauffeur, samen met zijn zoon Harry.


 


Elza kreeg borstkanker, maar herstelde hier spoedig van. In 1998 overlijd Gustaaf, hij was de laatste maanden echt levensmoe. Zijn vrouw Elza kreeg ronddie periode beginnende dementie. Zij trok in bij haar dochter, Nicole, in de Lindestraat. De dementie begon stillaan zijn tol te eisen en Elza had wegloop gedrag. In  2001 overleed ze in het huis van haar dochter ten gevolge van darmkanker.

Their notice of marriage was on June 13, 1935 in Niel, België.
