    Het behoort tot de deelstaat Noordrijn-Westfalen en ligt noordwestelijk van het Duitse Emmerik, en zuidwestelijk van het Nederlandse 's-Heerenberg. Hoog Elten (82m) ligt op de uitlopers van het in Nederland gelegen Montferland.
