Notes about Sikke Alberts Hempenius

Toen Sicke Alberts in 1747 schoolmeester te Engelum werd, noemde hij zich Hempenius, "van Hempens" afkomstig". Weliswaar was hij zelf slechts te Hempens gedoopt, maar zijn vader was er geboren en zijn groot- en overgrootvader hadden er gewoond.

Iedereen met de naam Hempenius stamt van hem af. Er heeft een andere familie Hempenius bestaan, nakomelingen van een zekere Cornelis Jacobs, pachter van een sate te Hempens in 1552. De eerste in deze familie die zich Hempenius noemde was dr. Jacobus Hempenius, gedoopt in Berlicum op 24-11-1639. Hij was advocaat aan het Hof van Friesland. Deze familie is uitgestorven. Helena Hempenius (1823-1914) was de laatste.

Beide families Hempenius staan beschreven in het genealogysk jierboekje nr. 449, uitgegeven door de Fryske Akademy, Ljouwert 1973.
